Community colleges serve a diverse set of dedicated learners, from students right out of high school to those returning to college while working full-time. Some individuals attending are also parents, and others may be undocumented immigrants in the United States. As an adjunct professor at one of the largest community colleges in the country, I have been part of the mobilization to keep students enrolled, acted as an advocate to retain necessary funding and tools from textbooks to laptops, and witnessed the personal growth and success of students. Being both a professor of English and an academic embedded coach has been a transformative experience.
Students’ needs are vast and varied, requiring support inside the classroom and beyond. And sometimes, they still need more. University Startups provides the bandwidth and expertise to address their needs regardless of their chosen path.
Understanding why community college students have chosen their particular path is vital to the necessary support systems. Sharing a variety of techniques for time management and study skills ensures each student will find the “tricks” that work for them. Life skills such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, how to search for jobs and internships, etc., are not always taught in the classroom. University Startups provides the missing link.
