With almost 4 million rising freshmen in high school today, University Startups has launched an innovative new asynchronous online course to prepare them for a successful transition to 9th grade. The Transitioning to High School course covers topics such as time management, locker and backpack organization, note taking, self advocacy, executive function skills, as well as many tips and resources for students and parents to best prepare for high school success.
The course is aimed at school districts, schools and non profit organizations that want to step up and standardize best practices for incoming high schoolers and their families. With 6 modules requiring 35 minutes each and mini assignments included, the course can be easily delivered fully asynchronously or lightly facilitated in a classroom or online environment. Participating students also receive invites to a virtual Impact Internship Program at University Startups and 24/7 access to an extensive library of online courses for college, career, and entrepreneurship success.
Success in high school starts early, and is based on learning executive function skills that often predict success in later life leading to higher education, higher income, and quality of life. Unfortunately - bad study habits also start early, and are hard to break once entrenched. Schools should introduce these concepts as early as possible in the summer and fall of freshman year to educate students and parents, and to set expectations.
